Thanks and Sunlight

A couple of weeks ago I published a blog post about my recent experience becoming a widower. It was the most personal thing I have ever shared publicly. Many people who read it got together and have sent me gifts and I want to tell you all thank you. It is nice to be thought about and cared about and that was kind of you to do that for someone you have never even met. Sometime it is difficult finding a new life while still in the midst of the life that has passed, and it is nice that people care about the struggles that I go through.

New grass and wildflowers grow among the remains of the ashe juniper trees burned out by a controlled burn

I did take a silent hike this morning at the wildlife refuge. The walking along the trail with a soundtrack of songbirds and a morning breeze is good for my mental health I think. I can visit with my memories and then be pulled out of that by seeing birds singing for the new day. Keeps me from dwelling too much on sad thoughts, but still allows me to have them.

A songbird sings for love or joy in the branches of a dead tree on a sunny morning

I have hiked these trails dozens of times and I hope to hike them dozens more enjoying the breeze and sunlight on my face. This spiny lizard was enjoying the sunlight, soaking up its warmth.

Thank you all again for the gifts and well-wishes. I appreciate you.

And here is a goose picture I forgot to post last time. I suppose they cross the road for the same reason that the chicken does.

  1. We’ve all been thinking about you during this difficult time. Getting out in nature and taking photos seems like a great way to get your mind off things, as you start moving forward toward whatever lies next.

I like that songbird photo the best, even though the shot of the geese crossing the road is very good, too.

I like what you said about not dwelling on the sad thoughts but still allowing yourself to have them. A healthy way to walk down this road.
I am glad you enjoyed a walk today, listening to the birds. The songbird is my favorite photo, though I do love the goslings crossing the road.

  3. Jason, I’m so happy you felt the sunshine. My friends here are unlike past “work” friends or even childhood friends. Although I have tight bonds with childhood friends and some career friends, the people in this community are some of the most amazing humans I’ve ever known. And the majority, I’ve never met in person. I feel anything can be shared here because we’re all here for the same purpose. Everyone is so kind and accepting, from what I’ve experienced. I’m glad that you felt you could share your experience. My heart just dropped for you. I was so sad and I can’t imagine what you’re going through. Nature can heal and I’m glad you can still “feel all the feels” and give yourself grace. I’m sorry for all you’re going through. I’m so happy you’re able to find delight in exploring and continuing your amazing photography.

I enjoyed the songbird. Isn’t it amazing hearing them all sing? I’ve always loved lizards! That’s an excellent close-up (chin up, little scaly buddy!). Mother Goose and her goslings! SO adorable! Honk honk! Move it, they say!

I’m praying for you, Jason. Karla
