I drive by these cows in tall grass everyday and think about photographing them. I finally stopped to photograph them when I saw some favorable clouds and light on one afternoon. The sun was out behind me and shining on the cows while the dark clouds were on the horizon in the background. I debated about getting closer and keeping the fence out of the shot, but I decided on the fence.

My processing technique with this was to apply lens correction and the Lightroom landscape preset as a starting place. I then put a graduated filter over the sky and brought the exposure down on the clouds. I then brought the exposure of the overall image up to what I thought looked good for the sunlit pasture. I also took just a little yellow out of the grass.
As dramatic as the clouds were, we still didn’t get any rain. Not sure what the cows thought about it.
Not much rain falling over the state this summer. We had a dry thunderstorm here in North Texas last weekend.

I like the treatment of the clouds it adds a nice contrast to the brighter foreground.
