Wildlife at the River

Some wildlife shots from a walk at Colorado Bend State Park. I wasn’t there to shoot wildlife, these were just opportunistic photos taken on a hike down to the waterfall. It was a hot day, but a lot of the hike is shady.

There is usually a heron or two hanging out in the river. He let me shoot for a while and then flew away up the river.

I saw a few deer, including one hopping along the rocks near the waterfall. I guess that is where the choicest bits of foliage are for a snack.

Shot with a 100-400mm lens with a 2.0x teleconverter.

Thanks

  1. Love the photos, especially the lasf one with the deer looking at you and the heron in flight. Sometimes, the best things that happen are the things that aren’t planned.
Did you swim in the falls? I would have much rather seen deer and herons when we were hiking, instead of a snake!

  2. Have you ever seen the Aoudads at Colorado Bend. I usually see them around the cliffs between Gorman Cave and Gorman Springs. First time I saw one thought it was a pronghorn but the ranger said they are Aoudads that escaped from a hunting ranch across the river.

  3. Impressive. I especially like the heron in flight. The deer are nice too… but my reflex is to jam my foot onto the brakes.
I’ve been considering a full-frame. But I tend to beat up my cameras; so I like to keep things as compact (and cheap) as possible. (Maybe an A7cII?) Still, the farthest I can reach with any of my APS-c lenses, even with the 1.5 crop, is about a 105mm FF equivalent. More set up for landscapes. There is a lot of beautiful wildlife here; but 200-400 sounds a little scary.
