The Wildflowers of Enchanted Rock

I went to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area last Sunday for a walk. Much to my delight, the place was covered with wildflowers. So, I have some photos of the wildflowers among the granite to display. These were all shot hand-held on a very cloudy morning, while hiking up the rock dome. The photo below was taken from the lower summit trail down near the trees. There were wildflowers everywhere and it was difficult to know where to shoot.

The wildflowers were happy growing in crevasses or pits in the granite that had collected dirt over the years.

All along the top of the dome, there are low areas full of plants and wildflowers. I guess they take advantage of the spring and grow and bloom before the heat of summer. In the photo below, the little speck in the distance is vulture flying around I think. There were also several people around but I removed them in editing; I don’t think they mind.

And lastly, one from the road on the way back from the park. The countryside was just covered with wildflowers and blooming cactus. I believe in this photo, you can see prickly pear cactus flowers, Mexican blanket, plains coreopsis, and probably a few other things.

The photos may have been a little better with some sunlight, but I took what I got. It was a nice excursion. Thanks for reading.

  1. Beautiful shots. I find myself in a better mood, just looking at them.

I occasionally see vultures, myself, while out on foot. I take them as nature’s warning sign to stop hiking. Maybe one day I’ll heed that warning.
