Some wildlife shots from a walk at Colorado Bend State Park. I wasn’t there to shoot wildlife, these were just opportunistic photos taken on a hike down to the waterfall. It was a hot day, but a lot of the hike is shady.
There is usually a heron or two hanging out in the river. He let me shoot for a while and then flew away up the river.

I saw a few deer, including one hopping along the rocks near the waterfall. I guess that is where the choicest bits of foliage are for a snack.

Shot with a 100-400mm lens with a 2.0x teleconverter.
Thanks
I see you shot a bird on the wing. Great photos, as usual. I like the heron in flight, best. That must have been a fast lens, you were using.

Really good light makes even mediocre gear look good. It was really bright out there, so better for focus tracking and shutter speed.

Love the photos, especially the lasf one with the deer looking at you and the heron in flight. Sometimes, the best things that happen are the things that aren’t planned.
Did you swim in the falls? I would have much rather seen deer and herons when we were hiking, instead of a snake!

No, you can’t swim there, but you can go hop in the river if you like.

No thanks! It would be too cold.

That was the park where we went armadillo hunting. I saw two there last Saturday. They must be bashful around you.

Where are the pictures of these mythical creatures that always show up for you? LOL!
Next time you see them, you need to talk to them and tell them they don’t need to be shy.

Have you ever seen the Aoudads at Colorado Bend. I usually see them around the cliffs between Gorman Cave and Gorman Springs. First time I saw one thought it was a pronghorn but the ranger said they are Aoudads that escaped from a hunting ranch across the river.

I haven’t seen them there. Seen lots of them out at Big Bend.

Impressive. I especially like the heron in flight. The deer are nice too… but my reflex is to jam my foot onto the brakes.
I’ve been considering a full-frame. But I tend to beat up my cameras; so I like to keep things as compact (and cheap) as possible. (Maybe an A7cII?) Still, the farthest I can reach with any of my APS-c lenses, even with the 1.5 crop, is about a 105mm FF equivalent. More set up for landscapes. There is a lot of beautiful wildlife here; but 200-400 sounds a little scary.

I love the photo of the deer reaching in to nibble the greens in the rocks. That’s a really nice shot.

Nice collection Jason. It’s nice when they provide a bit of movement in addition to their poses. Hard to practice otherwise. And, it doesn’t look all that shady.
